Dinner was cold. Penelo was not happy. She was going to kill Kytes. It took extra shifts at the Sandsea and Migelo's to get the night off. And where was Vaan? Probably off pretending to be a hunter by killing rats in the aqueducts.
Honestly, seventeen years, a plague, a war and two families lost and the blond was still little more than a child. He always had someone looking after him. His parents. Her parents. Her brothers. His brother. Now her. Was it any wonder, with all those guardians that he never grew up?
Penelo sighed. Perhaps she did spoil him. It kept him tied to her. He would always come back to her. She was his haven. If she pushed him too hard, he might leave. Maybe he would come back, but maybe he wouldn't. She couldn't bear the idea of that. A world without Vaan was a world she couldn't imagine. She had lost so much; she couldn't lose this. Couldn't lose him.
The slam of the door startled her out of her thoughts. She stood up, dagger in hand. It would never do to be caught unaware in Lowtown, even in one's own home.
"Vaan? Is that you?"
"Penelo? What are you doing home so early?" Vaan looked at her, confused. Then his expression changed as he glanced around her shoulder. "Whoa, is that a real meal? With meat?" He hugged her and then rushed over to the table to dig in without a thought. Penelo sighed. She slid the dagger back into it's sheath and walked over to join him.
"So...you forgot." Vaan looked up at Penelo. His brows creased as he tried to think. Then his eyes bugged out and he almost chocked as he remembered.
"...That was tonight?" Penelo nodded, an indulgent smile on her lips while one eyebrow twitched ever so slightly. "Aw man. I'm sorry Penelo. I totally forgot! But wait until you hear what happened today. So like after we split up at Migelo's I headed for the Sandsea and..."
Penelo sat back and listened to Vann's dramatizations of the day's events. That was what she did. Back when her parents were alive, once a month they would splurge the money to buy meat and the entire family would sit down to a meal. Now that it was just the two of them, they couldn't afford quite so often, but Penelo and Vaan still did it when they could afford to. The irregularity however meant the Vaan would always forget right after he forked over the gil. He always come home late, because normally Penelo came back even later. So she forgave him like she always did. Because even though he was always late, he was also always there.
And for her that was enough.
